Roun 3142: PUANT [Results] Definition 15 was a combination of the real definition with submission from Tim Lodge. Eight of you voted for it. I don’t think we can ask Michael Proffitt of the OED to deal the next round, so that chore falls to Tim. Runner-up is Ryan McGill, whose definition rotten; fetid earned 5 votes. Puant had that sense in Anglo-Norman but not, it appears, in English. The word died out in English around Shakespeare’s time, but survives as a literary word in modern French; though it occurs more frequently in the sense arrogant; prideful.
