[Dixonary] Round 2967 word, GINGICH
Folks,
The word for Round 2967 is: ********************* GINGICH ********************* where capitalization means nothing. Please send your invented definitions of GINGICH by private email to emallach at verizon dot net in the next 46+ hours, by 9 am US EST on Sat., March 9. If you know what it means, please let me know ASAP by private email. If enough people know it I'll pick another word, hopefully in time to keep the same schedule. Just don't hit Reply or Reply All. Either will send your message to the whole group. According to timeanddate.com <http://timeanddate.com/>, the deadline is: and other times in other places. You might want to confirm any time conversion that affects you. That site's good, but nobody's perfect. I expect votes to be due two days later, 9 am Monday in the eastern U.S. That's only 47 hours later in the U.S. because we'll switch to Daylight Savings (summer) time during the voting period. New players are welcome. (So are old ones who've been quiet for a while. Come back to the fold.) Just send in a definition that you invented without looking up what the word really means. Full rules at http://www.dixonary.net/game-rules-and-advice/rules <http://www.dixonary.net/game-rules-and-advice/rules>. Don't word announcements always come from the group? Don't Replies always go to the group? They always have in my experience, I've made the same mistake more than once.

Re: [Dixonary] Round 2967 word, GINGICH
I am probably the least qualified to reply, but: word announcements
generally come from the person (in my case, the name would be hapless, inept, and fill in any other adjectives you like") dealer. You want the word announcement to come from the dealer, because it is the dealer who collects the definitions and it is easy for the players to use reply command to the word announcement with their fake definitions. Re: [Dixonary] Round 2967 word, GINGICH
Guerri,
Messages look like they come from the dealer, the From address shows the dealer, but there is also a Reply-To address (which may or may not be visible, depending on your email software and its settings). That address, which is the default when someone hits Reply, is the group address. There is a Google Groups setting that controls this. Right now our group's Post Replies setting is set to "To the entire group." It can be set to "To the author of the message only," but that would mess up voting as well as conversations like this one. Changing the setting back and forth between defining and voting would be impractical, probably impossible to get right if we want to continue to have conversations that aren't just definitions or votes, and confusing in any case. So I think the best solution is to do what we've always done: Change the 'To" address when we send a fake definition to a dealer. The good news is that you seem to have been doing that quite well all along, including this round. Thanks for the compliment, but the round isn't over yet. So there is
still time for me to screw something up. Although I am not the dealer, so it will be hard, if not impossible, to have a major impact. Re: [Dixonary] Round 2967 word, GINGICH
In my experience word announcements always come from a person and never
(until this recent one of yours) come from the group. My mail software is Thunderbird and makes a very clear distinction between 'reply' and 'reply list' and I can rely on 'reply' to submit my definitions - and I have learned to use 'reply-list' when voting I assumed that Google had changed something when this round went "wrong" for me - every single one of your submissions about this word have come as 'Efrem G Mallach' via Dixonary wrote: - all your earlier ones from 2899 (just because that is the length of my current TB list) have come From:emallach (AT) verizon (DOT) net hence my error *JohnnyB* On 08/03/2019 14:41, 'Efrem G Mallach' via Dixonary wrote: > Don't word announcements always come from the group? Re: [Dixonary] Round 2967 word, GINGICH
I didn't change any of my Google Groups settings: not my email address, not any preferences or options, not the address to which it forwards things, nothing, nada, rien, nichevo. I noticed the same change but figured it's a Google update to make it clearer that something from a particular sender actually came from the Google Group, not directly from that person. As I think about it, that's an improvement. I don't know why it doesn't seem to affect everyone, though.
(I made some changes to my Google Voice account yesterday, but nothing that should affect Google Groups, and this started happening before I made them..) Maybe Google is rolling out the change gradually and other sender names will start looking like that soon. I don't know. To be continued, no doubt ... Efrem P.S. Everyone should have received a voting list for GINGICH by now. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=== > On Mar 9, 2019, at 10:01 AM, Johnb - co.uk <johnb (AT) john-barrs (DOT) co.uk> wrote: > > In my experience word announcements always come from a person and never (until this recent one of yours) come from the group. > > My mail software is Thunderbird and makes a very clear distinction between 'reply' and 'reply list' and I can rely on 'reply' to submit my definitions - and I have learned to use 'reply-list' when voting > > I assumed that Google had changed something when this round went "wrong" for me - every single one of your submissions about this word have come as 'Efrem G Mallach' via Dixonary wrote: - all your earlier ones from 2899 (just because that is the length of my current TB list) have come From:emallach (AT) verizon (DOT) net <mailto:From:emallach (AT) verizon (DOT) net> hence my error > > JohnnyB > On 08/03/2019 14:41, 'Efrem G Mallach' via Dixonary wrote: >> Don't word announcements always come from the group? I hadn't thought about Google. Dixonary is a Google group. Maybe I knew
that at some point, but I have been treating Dixonary as a game, played via Email. Re: [Dixonary] Round 2967 word, GINGICH
I hope I am sending this only once; Had computer problems, and had to
reboot. It makes sense to me that word announcements come from the dealer's address, not from the group. Players are going to send fake defs to the dealer, and it is easy to reply to the person who is dealing by replying to the announcement message. Of course it is also easy to make mistakes, and I am rapidly acquiring them. And sometimes a dealer will want fake definitions sent to some address other than the one used to announce the word. And since you mentioned Thunderbird, I am wondering whether there is a new version because I had all kinds of stuff included in my message, that I had to delete. I think this may have been the incorporation of parts of other messages into my reply. But as I mention a new version: I don't know how new versions of Thunderbird get delivered. I thought that one had to specifically allow a new version to be installed, but maybe that is no longer true. 1. They all seem to come from the dealer, but because the group forwards them to everyone, they have a default "Reply-To" address of the group.

Re: [Dixonary] Round 2967 word, GINGICH
OK. I can't remember exactly what I do, but I think I compose a new
message, rather than a reply. At least when I am actually paying attention to what I'm doing. Although I may formulate a reply and then correct it to address the dealer rather than the group. Otherwise I end up adding to my collection of crowns. On 3/8/2019 11:46 AM, 'Efrem G Mallach' via Dixonary wrote: > 1. Re: [Dixonary] Round 2967 word, GINGICH
Aha: I see from this that John's definition went to the group as well. In that case, the public reply was not an error on my part. I'm afraid that the offer of 2 dp as an apology is withdrawn, though of course John can still replace it - and I hope he will!
