Default [Dixonary] Round 2790: DONKEYMAN Results

DONKEY-MAN is defined in the Dictionary of Caribbean English Usage as: “A traditional masquerade figure, being a man masked and dressed as a woman, dancing in a gaily coloured, decorated framework in the shape of a donkey (or horse or cow), and usu. the main figure of a trio or foursome of dancers accompanied by a tuk-band.”*

This was not the definition I used, however.

One of the first replies I got for DONKEYMAN was from the esteemed Mr. Barrs, who opined, "I suppose that a man who runs a donkey - or a donkey engine come to that, is too obvious." *The relationship was also obvious to Tim Lodge and Effrem Mallach, who submitted their own versions of a man who runs a donkey engine with quite a bit more specificity than the dictionary definition, and I combined them with the much more generic real one.

Well, it wasn’t obvious to me.* Despite 20 years in the Navy I had not heard of a donkey engine, nor that someone in charge of an engineroom (which I was for 2 years) should be called a donkeyman. But it appears that I succeeded in a double bluff.* The real definition was obvious enough for an almost-DQ and two fake defs, but too obvious to actually attract any votes, giving me a D0.

As for the rest of the definitions, Chris Carson and Mike Shefler tied with 6 votes for their less obvious engineering connections.* By virtue of his lead in the rolling scores, Mike gets the deal with his oil pump, while Chris's donkey engine (but not the operator) is the real winner.

1. an oil pump consisting of an overhead beam connected to a reciprocating engine on one end and a piston on a rod descending into the well. Also called a nodding donkey, or donkey pumper due to its appearance.*****
