[Dixonary] Rd. 2900: Vote for pogonology!
Hi all,
I'm sorry to be a little late posting (and for forgetting to post a progress report), but you know how it is when you have the deal...it is always the worst time! But the word must have been stimulating because there are 16 definitions to choose from this time, only one of which approaches reality, more than I've seen in a long time. Please choose your two favorites and vote by the deadline of 11 p.m. EDT on Wednesday June 13 which is, I think, 3 a.m. GMT, for all you early birds. Happy voting! Nancy 1. The study of gravestones and memorials to the dead. 2. The study of deep-sea worms (pogonophores) that cluster around warm-water vents in very deep ocean trenches 3. The study of writing implements. 4. When dissimilar or opposite terms, or words, can mean the same thing; as in "the house burned up" and the house burned down." 5. The study of motion, or of the energy used to produce motion. 6. Study of an animal phylum restricted to the deep sea and remarkably common in certain habitats there. 7. Foolish talk; nonsense; folly. [Obs.] 8. An agreement to share the credit or blame for an unpopular decision. 9. The doctrine of purposeless in nature. 10. The study or wearing of beards. 11. The study of folk games played largely with found items 12. [Rare] The study of singular exceptions; of mutations and birth defects. 13. A solution intended to address a complex problem by trying to account for all possible contingencies, but typically proving to be too broadly conceived and therefore too oversimplified to be of any practical use. 14. A collection of pre-industrial weapons and armor. 15. The study of juice blending [poss. from POG, blend of passion fruit, orange and guava juices, common in Hawaii]. 16. _humorous_ the study of the "Pogo" comic strip by Walt Kelly, and its political positions. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Dixonary" group. Re: [Dixonary] Rd. 2900: Vote for pogonology!
I was tempted to go with 2 but, then there is 6, which is so similar that
it moved me off it. Which means that 2 is probably correct. In any event, I kind of like: 9 - the purposeless nature thing; and 16 - because it's Pogo the possum, for goodness sake! It's great to see the number of players creeping up again.
I'll vote for 4 and 5. 4. When dissimilar or opposite terms, or words, can mean the same thing; as in "the house burned up" and the house burned down. 5. I can see from the definitions that someone got the same idea I did, but
I'll be curious to see if that person notices the same. In that spirit, I'm going with the other two related definitions, 2 & 6. > 2.
