[Dixonary] Round 3060 vote for opple-scopple
Here are 13 defs for opple-scopple, one of which came from a reputable
dictionary. Vote for your two favorites no later than 9 AM, EDT, Friday, March 27. 1. or offal scraps, is traditionally made by combining buckwheat and cornmeal to scraps from the slaughter of a pig to thicken up after hours and hours of cooking, then poured into loaf pans, refrigerated, and then sliced and fried till crispy. 2. to remove from a position of power (topple). 3. [Scots] spilling water (_scupple_ q.v.) 4. child's version of Episcopal (q.v.) 5. spoiled through incompetence or clumsiness. 6. [British (originally _English regional] rough strong cider, esp. as made in the West Country of England. 7. to scramble for sweetmeats, as children do. 8. tiddly; drunk. 9. [British] a slide that twists around a tower at an amusement park. 10. the custom of boys at Shrove-tide to go around in the evening and pelt the doors of the inhabitants with pieces of broken crockery. 11. [Derbyshire dialect] to hobble a horse or donkey; also to fetter a human, often by using the stocks. 12. a stew made from leftovers. 13. 12 is vaguely credible, and the author of 10 deserves a point for creativity. (I'd like that one even more if the rascals pelted the inhabitants themselves, though - not just their doors!)
