Default [Dixonary] Round 2810: DRAWGLOVES Results

John Brand’s Observations on the Popular Antiquities of Great Britain notes, ‘There was a sport entitled “Draw Gloves,” of which, however, I find no description.’* That lack of description did not stop a few dictionaries from attempting to define it, of course.* Halliwell’s Dictionary states that it’s a game played by holding up the fingers representing words by their different positions, whilst the OED claims it’s a race to remove gloves, as listed in Definition 13.* Other dictionaries are less specific and ultimately inconclusive.* Our own Messr. Barrs felt it sounded like a game, but in his imaginary variant, the gloves came off last rather than first, although it still involved a kiss (likely more interesting in his variant than the OED’s).* I think my favorite definition for this woid comes from the Omnificent English Dictionary In Limerick Form which recognizes the uncertainty and defines it thus:

In bygone times, masters and misses

Played at draw-gloves. The forfeit was kisses.

But did players contend

To unglove? To extend

Talking fingers? A mystery, this is.

(As an aside, I wonder if there would be a players’ revolt if I insisted on my next deal that everyone’s definitions be in limerick form.)

Votes were widely distributed this round, with everyone who submitted a definition receiving at least one vote.* Only two players received more than two votes, being Tim Lodge who collected five votes for his fruit, enough to earn him the deal even without his correct guess.* Mike Shefler’s mechanical hand earned four votes and real winner status.* John Barrs and Tony Abell joined Tim in correctly identifying the game.* Or maybe not.

All yours, Tim!
