Default [Dixonary] Round 3119 - TITI - RESULTS

a:link {color: #0000FF;} a:visited {color: #800080;} body { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Verdana; color: #000000; background-color: FFFFFF; margin-top: 0px; margin-left: 10px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-right: 0px; }

Paul Keating, with 5 points, is the next dealer. Here are the results in table form as a .jpg and also attached as a .pdf file. Please note that #10 would have also been correct, which I didn't realize when I posted the new word, but that wouldn't have changed the results (thank goodness!). Efrem's vote came in after the deadline, but I accepted it...which made this round a D1, not a D0. 🙁 It appears that a number of people didn't vote. I hope I didn't miss any emails!

Apologies for messing up your D0 with a late vote, Judy! You would have been well within your rights to reject it, coming in as it did about 15 minutes after the deadline. Nobody, especially I, would have complained had you not counted it - and you would have kept your D0. You may not get Dixonary points for that, but you surely get karma points.

Just as a matter of interest, the OED has three separate definitions of
TITI. As well as the South American monkey, it can mean various evergreen
shrubs and trees of the Eastern US, including the buckwheat tree. More
interestingly, the OED gives the third meaning as the sooty shearwater or
muttonbird, which led me to circle def 10 as the real one after I'd voted.

I supplied the third def, which is the meaning of titi in Maori. In general
usage it now has macrons over the i's, so is slightly different. I
generally Google words before playing them and reject those with multiple
meanings.

Re: [Dixonary] Round 3119 - TITI - RESULTS Judy,

After posting, there nothing to be done. I don't know if every dealer has done it, but it has happened to most of us at least once. I came within an inch of doing it this round myself, and had to cast around hurriedly for a substitute.

And sometimes dealers do it deliberately, as in "the new word is morwong, and I don't mean morwong in the sense of padnag".

Not everyone has a subscription to the OED: as I understand it, people with English and Canadian library cards usually have free access via their public library, but the rest of us aren't so fortunate. And, of course, the OED isn't omniscient, and is also discriminating, so Google may turn up hits from online dictionaries that the OED editors either haven't considered yet, or regard as unpersuasive. And the online dictionaries, in their turn, have scant coverage of words that went obsolete prior to 1755, unless they are in Century; specialist historical dictionaries always excluded, of course.

In two words: don't fret.

Regards

Default [Dixonary] Round 3119 - TITI - RESULTS

I would have been DQ, but Google Groups messed up my settings utterly. I
finally had to find an "old windown" to work with!

I usually do that also. This time I was in a rush and didn't have time to research.

Judy,

Regards

So...what do we do when that happens, especially if we didn't realize it before posting the request for definitions?

Just as a matter of interest, the OED has three separate definitions of TITI. As well as the South American monkey, it can mean various evergreen shrubs and trees of the Eastern US, including the buckwheat tree. More interestingly, the OED gives the third meaning as the sooty shearwater or muttonbird, which led me to circle def 10 as the real one after I'd voted.
