Default [Dixonary] Round 2810: DRAWGLOVES Vote

A baker’s dozen definitions for DRAWGLOVES are presented below. One is real; the other twelve are products of our collective imaginations.

Please vote for two, by public reply to this message, before deadline in about 34 hours, 2pm PDT on Friday, June 15. That’s 5pm EDT, 10pm UTC, 11pm BST in the UK, and Midnight CEST in the Netherlands, and Saturday at 7am AEST in Melbourne, and 9am in Wellington.

1. a game in which the players start fully dressed and wearing heavy gauntlet gloves and as they lose a round they have to take off a piece of clothing - the gloves come off last. [Henry Fielding "Tom Jones": In the game of drawgloves the players claim a kiss from the loser]

2. a mechanical hand attached to a reciprocating piston used to grab and pull wool, flax, hemp, etc. through a carding machine.

3. drawer-liners, typically of fine cloth, sometimes embroidered, to protect clothing from snags. [Obs.]

4. Heat-resistant hand coverings used in work such as steelmaking and glassblowing.

5. [N.W. Eng. Dial.] sloe, the fruit of the blackthorn tree.

6. The reaction of shivering (as from cold).

7. Detachable sleeves.

8. A shackle or fetter.

9. One of the common names for the Digitalis genus.

10. Metal springs attached to ropes or leather reins to keep them taut.

11. sockets into which guide bars fit to ensure correct alignment when closing a drawbridge.

12. tall Eurasian plants with erect spikes of flowers, typically pinkish-purple or white, shaped like the fingers of gloves.

13. An old parlour game, also called drawing (of) gloves, which consisted apparently in a race at drawing off gloves at the utterance of certain words.. [Obs.]
