Default [Dixonary] Round 2929: PROSLAMBANOMENOS results

One of the most famous mathematicians in history is Pythagoras, whose theorem about the geometry of right triangles (a2 + b2 = c2) is well known to students of algebra worldwide. Pythagoras was also a philosopher and musician, attributing the beauty of math to music and to the universe (he coined the word kosmos). He is quoted as saying, “There is geometry in the humming of the strings, there is music in the spacing of the spheres.”

While earlier musicians had recognized the octave was double the vibrational frequency of a string, Pythagoras essentially invented musical theory, when he discovered the harmonics of vibrating strings and that musical intervals could be expressed as mathematical ratios such as the perfect fifth (3/2), perfect fourth (4/3), major third (5/4), minor third (6/5) and more. Eventually the Greeks would develop a system based on the tetrachord, a sequence of four notes spanning a perfect fourth – the most common modern musical scale (the Diatonic scale, lettered A thru G) is comprised of two tetrachords.* Unlike modern scales which typically ascend, the ancient Greek scales descended.* The lament bass tetrachord (A-G-F-E) is popular in classical music, pop music, and musical theatre.

Four tetrachords were used in ancient Greek musical theory, but an additional note had to be added to the bottom to complete the lower octave.* This note (the lowest A), was the proslambanomenos.

With the plethora (bonus Greek word) of Greek definitions, I thought the 220 Hz note might slip through unnoticed, but my hopes were dashed with the very first vote.* Fortunately, only one other vote pegged the true definition, cleverly placed at the “tetra” position #4, leaving me with a respectable D2.

I’m sure no one is surprised that the author of definition 13, the attack of small steps, won the deal with 8 votes.* I can reveal now that its author is none other than Ryan McGill, who has already likely been looking up a new woid to deal.

Shani Naylor and Nancy Shepherdson share the coveted second place position with 5 points each.
