[Dixonary] Round 3702 results
Google tells us that OG can stand for “original gangster” or the Biblical
king of Bashan, but I have used the more ordinary meaning, “a shilling”, which the OED says is “chiefly *Australian* and *New Zealand* *slang* ( *disused* and *historical*)”. I had never heard of it before spotting it online. Top place goes back to Paul K (7 unnatural points) with his young def, and the Tims share the coveted real winner position. Take it away Paul! 1. A shilling. OED. D2 Votes from Paul K & Ann D. 2. Bland and mushy. Debbie E, who voted 4 & 6. Score: 0 No votes. 3. An island (fr. Gaelic). Tim B, who voted 10 & 12. Score: 4. In Irish folklore, a mythical land lying to the west of Ireland and now submerged in the Atlantic Ocean. Tim L, who voted 3 & 11. Score: 4 Votes from Judy M, Tim B, Mike S & Johnny B. 11. *Ireland.* The younger: used after a person’s name to denote the younger of two bearing the same name in a family, *esp*. a daughter of the same name as her mother; informally, used alone as a nickname [Ir. *óg* young]. Paul K, who voted *1* & 3. Score: *7* Votes from Tim L, Mike S, Ann D, Johnny B & Efrem M 12. OG was a king of Bashan who was of enormous stature - his bed was about 13 and a half feet long (nearly 3.5 metres) according to Deuteronomy 3:11. The word OG then became used to define the "Original Giant" and has passed into our language as kind of acronym with the meaning of "Original". Johnny B, who voted 10 & 11. Score: 2 Votes from Tim B & Dan W. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Dixonary" group.
