[Dixonary] Round 2846: STANDISH call for votes
I must apologise for the delay in posting. I got home from church this morning and found a message
asking me to take a friend for an emergency visit to Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. After eventually finding the right department in the right hospital, it took the usual hours to get the issue resolved. Fortunately, though the symptoms suggested a detached retina, it turned out to be something less serious, and we got back half an hour or so ago. Please vote for TWO definitions, as a public forum message (in reply to this one), before the deadline, which is 10.00 UTC on Tuesday 31st October (Halloween). Treats accepted, but no tricks, please! New players are welcome, even if you didn't enter a definition this round. Don't look in a dictionary. Full rules, if you're curious, can be seen at www.dixonary.net. 1: a pompous manner. 2: bookish or pedantic. 3: modish; fashionable. 4: a recessed lamp in a bulkhead. 5: [Obs.] grey (<Lat. _stannum_ = tin). 6: portions of a text that are not yet translated. 7: a stand for ink, pens, and other writing materials. 8: a state of perplexity or embarrassment; as, to be at a stand what to do. 9: the formal back-to-back pose of two duellists before the signal is given. 10: a stew of cooked maize and venison, after Capt. Myles Standish (1584-1656). 11: [Naut.] A short gaff spar fixed under the bowsprit for guying down the jib boom. 12: a small hidden cupboard, built into the wall of a house, used to conceal valuables. 13: [military slang, usually mocking] a flanking maneuver by a mercenary force; named for Myles Standish, whose initial use of the maneuver was unsuccessful. Best wishes, Tim Bourne. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Dixonary" group.
