Default [Dixonary] OT: Amazon Sign In

I have noticed that Amazon now requires an additional step to sign in.
They seem to have implemented this two-step process without my knowledge
or permission. The way it works is that I sign in with my name and
password which worked from the beginning of time until recently. Now, I
enter my name and password and they send me a special code that I have
to enter.

I noticed something on their site about how to "enable" this two step
process (I didn't read it) but I could not find any way to disable it.

I happen to have a Kindle. I don't know whether the way I acquired the
Kindle matters or not, but just in case: the Kindle belonged to my
husband. He "lost" it and bought a new one. I asked if I could have the
old one if I could find it. It took me about 5 minutes, maybe less, but
I digress. At any rate I now have his old one. I think he de-registered
it or whatever is required, so that it is now registered to me. I
suspect that I have logged into Amazon at least once with the Kindle
(you know - playing with a new toy). But 99% of the time I log in from
my PC.

What may have happened is that Amazon thinks I may not really be me when
I log in from my PC. This would mean that somehow it knows that I am not
using my Kindle and therefore I am not me. And therefore it decides to
send me a special code that I have to enter before it will let me proceed.

So do any of you know how I can straighten this out? I already know that
banging my head against the wall doesn't work. And I admit that it is a
fairly trivial problem in comparison to a lot of other problems a person
might have.
