Default [Dixonary] Back-to-Back Deals

Nancy came very close to playing 3 back-to-back deals this round
(1720/2/5), and it piqued my curiosity. I wanted to find out how close
other players have come to doing it. So I did some investigation.

Of the players currently active, Tim Lodge, Toni Savage and Dan Widdis
have all dealt 3 rounds back-to-back, besides Dave Cunningham, of
course, who became D-in-P when he did it back in round 511/3/5. Nobody
has succeeded in doing it more than once. Toni very nearly made it to
4 in a row: 1680/2/4/7, and (besides Nancy) four other current players
have scored near misses for 3 in a row. (By near-miss I mean that one
pair of deals in the run were 3 rounds apart rather than 2).

Dealing two rounds in a row is rather less hard. There are 30 names on
the list (a dozen of them current players). And Scott Crom, Dodi
Schultz and Mike Shefler have all managed to do this no less than 6
times each.

You can find the full results of what I found out in the Files
section, in History and Statistics\Back-to-Back Deals.

Also include my record of having to deal *simultaneous* rounds in Tapcis and Mpgames several times <g>. I think Toni may still have some of the applicable records.

Me too. And I continue to occasionally have those double-deals (or triple
deals if you count the ACRO game) with the current incarnation of the game.
(Of course, with fewer players, those happen more often.)

Speaking of deals: Has anyone seen an announcement of a word for the next
one? None seems to have reached my mailbox, and I think it's well over 24

Default [Dixonary] Back-to-Back Deals

Since I've ended up dealing so much lately (5 of the last 10 rounds!) I
thought I'd have a look at the history of back-to-back deals in the game.
It's wasted a morning messing about with the used word list and a
spreadsheet.

Single back-to-back deals aren't all that uncommon - it has happened 229
times in 3155 rounds. Double back-to-backs, in other words dealing every
other round for 5 rounds, are rarer; there have been 18. The recent
sequence where Mike and I swapped deals for 6 rounds is unique, I believe,
as is my run of 3 back to backs (4 deals).

There have been a few near misses on the sequence of 6 rounds. Nancy
Shepherdson and Tim Bourne almost achieved it when Nancy dealt rounds 2386,
2388, and 2390 while Tim Bourne dealt 2389 and 2391. Nancy also dealt
1938, 1940, and 1942, while Mike Shefler dealt 1947 and 1949. Scott Crom
dealt 1901, 1903, and 1905, while I dealt 1902 and 1904.

That's probably more than you ever wanted to know!

I’m curious now about the “smallest number of unique dealers to deal in N rounds” which is an extension of the “2 dealers in 6 rounds” record you and Mike just set.* Looks like I’m about to download the used woid list and play with it!

Default Re: [Dixonary] Back-to-Back Deals

So I looked into the smallest number of dealers to deal N consecutive rounds.* As Tim pointed out, 2 dealers combining to deal 6 rounds has only happened once, with Mike and Tim L sharing rounds 3149-3154.

The recent streak also is the only time that 4 players have dealt 10, 11, or 12 consecutive rounds, that 5 players have dealt 13, 14, or 15 rounds, and that 6 players have dealt 16 rounds.

There were a few earlier occurrences of 7 players dealing 17 and 18 rounds.

Tim and Mike have not (yet) reached the earlier records for the smallest number of players to deal 19, 20, or 21 consecutive rounds although it’s still possible, and they are joint holders of that record.* Seven players dealt 21 consecutive rounds between them starting in round 2768: Tim Lodge, John Barrs, Mike Shefler, Dan Widdis, Shani Naylor, Efrem Mallach, and Keith Hale.*

We’re currently at 7 unique players for 18 rounds running:* Tim Lodge, Debbie Embler, Dan Widdis, Paul Keating, Tim Bourne, Alan Mallach, and Mike Shefler. **But all is not lost; Debbie and I are at the beginning of that streak, the 5 other players have done 15 rounds starting at 3142 and can beat the previous records, if they continue with that smaller group!

On the other end of the spectrum, the game has never gone more than 18 rounds with more than 18 dealers (and given our smaller numbers now, that’s likely to stand.). 18 different dealers in 18 rounds only happened once, starting in round 607.* Dave Cunningham ruined the streak by dealing round 625 when he’d just dealt 621.

Lucky me! I thought everybody got caught in those endless back-to-back
deals every once in a while.

(I don't think that second one of mine and Mike's qualifies, though.)

I should be back to playing regularly again soon -- latest election cycle
over Tuesday -- so maybe I'll beat Tim's record. Hope not!

I may have confused you with my inaccurate typing (or more likely my
scrambled brain).

I typed "Nancy also dealt 1938, 1940, and 1942, while Mike Shefler dealt
1947 and 1949", but Mike's rounds were actually 19*3*7 and 19*3*9.

Similar to the "Used Word Lists" we could avoid the need to manually update
that list by adding a few formulas into the Used Word List sheet.

I've now added these to the sheet as well, indexed by name, although I only
get 214 total.

Tim Lodge is the undisputed king of back-to-backs with 26. Mike Shefler
has 21. Dave Cunningham and Paul Keating tie for the third podium spot with
14.
