Default [Dixonary] Round 3224 word: ENS

Folks,

The word for Round 3224 is:

***************************
ENS
***************************
where capitalization has no significance.

Please send your fake definition of ENS to emallach at verizon dot net by 5 pm US EST on Sat., Jan. 15, just under 48 hours from now. Don't Reply to this message without changing your reply's To field, or you'll send your fake to all of us.

If you know what ENS means, please let me know ASAP the same way. If enough people know it, I'll find another.

According to timeanddate.com <http://timeanddate.com/>, the deadline is:

and other times in other places. You might want to confirm any conversion that affects you. That site's good, but nobody's perfect.

I expect votes to be due 48 hours after the definition deadline. There may be a delay in posting results as I plan to spend Monday afternoon at the Mass. Museum of Contemporary Art and don't know when I'll get back to my Airbnb. More info in the call for votes.

New players are welcome, as are old ones who've been quiet for a while. Just send me a definition that you invented without looking up the word. Full rules at http://www.dixonary.net/game-rules-and-advice/rules <http://www.dixonary.net/game-rules-and-advice/rules>.

Happy defining, and stay safe -

Efrem

Ann,

If you're thinking of "en" as the typographic unit of measure, this is totally unrelated. It is a word that happens to end in the letter "s," not a plural. So, please go ahead and define - which you could even if you knew the word - and feel free to vote when the time comes.

Efrem

P.S. In this case it probably doesn't matter that your message went to the whole group, but I figured I'd reply to the group too.

I was contemplating a NAD about “a dashed line on a chart, with shorter dashes than the EMS” but it wasn’t funny enough.

Default Re: [Dixonary] Round 3224 word: ENS

Alan/etc.,

You can assume whatever you want. You have also assumed that "ens" is a noun. I didn't say that. I dealt the word and clarified that its final "s" doesn't indicate a plural noun. From there on it's up to you.

Rules experts: Do I have to answer that?

Seriously: the plural form of a noun can indicate Old English, Latin, Greek, Hebrew, etc., origin, or conversely that some of these can be eliminated. Even saying that an English word has a plural form at all says that it's a noun.

If you're thinking of "en" as the typographic unit of measure, this is totally unrelated. It is a word that happens to end in the letter "s," not a plural. So, please go ahead and define - which you could even if you knew the word - and feel free to vote when the time comes.

Default Re: [Dixonary] Round 3224 word: ENS

Actually, what Alan wrote isn't true. He may have confused Latvian and Lithuanian surnames. According to this site <https://surnam.es/latvia> the most common Latvian surname that ends in "s," Berzins, is #6 on the list. Only 7 of the top 20 end in "s," not a trivial fraction but far from a "great majority." The same site, on a different page, has the top Lithuanian surname that does NOT end in "s," Ivanova, in 27th place. The top 26, and all the following ones down to #48, all do.

So, you may want to rethink your plan.

As Noel Coward didn't say: "Lithianians and Letts do it, but Lithuanians do
it more frequently".

Apologies to Cole Prter, who - as far as I can see - actually wrote the
Lithuanians and Letts line. Noel Coward wrote several different versions
of lyrics to the same song later.
