Round 3133: ENVINED [Results] I found this word in the
OED, but when I cross-checked it with the only source citation (the General Prologue of the
Canterbury Tales), and the University of Michigan's
Middle English Dictionary, I decided that the OED's definition was curiously archaic, and suggested to me a different sense from the one Chaucer clearly had in mind in this description of the Franklin:
An housholdere, and that a greet, was he;
Seint Julian he was in his contree.
His breed, his ale, was alweys after oon;
A bettre envyned man was nowher noon.
In David Wright’s translation (which never hesitates to translate two lines as three if a gloss is needed):
And he kept open house so lavishly
He was St Julian to the country round,
The patron saint of hospitality.
His bread and ale were always of the best,
Like his wine-cellar, which was unsurpassed.
The turnout of voters matched the number of submissions. One must assume that many players had more momentous events than game deadlines in the past week to occupy their attention. There was a 5-way tie for top score of 3 points: Mike Shefler, John Barrs, Tim Lodge, Judy Madnick and Efrem Mallach. All 5 were natural scores. Of those players, John Barrs is highest in the 5-round rolling scores (with 17+3 = 20). Runner up is Mike Shefler, who comes second-highest in the rolling scores (with 11+3 = 14).
Ryan McGill's ballot arrived some 3 hours after the deadline and his vote for 10 would have given him 2 points. But I only read it when I was on the point of hitting the Send button on this message.
