[Dixonary] Round 2981 Time for vote

Hi all

Just 10 defs this time (maybe we need to rustle up a few new players).
Please vote for two:

1. A style of dressing that involves the deliberate choice of
unremarkable or unfashionable casual clothes.

2. [stat.] The set of all points in a finite distribution that fall
within one standard deviation of its mean.

3. A form of popular music in which the lyrics cover mundane subjects
and are delivered in a monotonous drone.

4. The basis from which the geothermal gradient is calculated.

5. Sunken panel or coffer in a ceiling

6. [N.Z.] A potato and tuna sandwich.

7. [Stat] A point on a normal distribution within half a standard
deviation of the mean.

8. In a workplace operating flexible working hours, the basic hours
that all staff are expected to work unless otherwise agreed.

9. Grey stucco applied to a building.

10. Primary manufactured plastic used is a raw material; usu. supplied in
pellet form.

The deadline is 9pm Tuesday 7 May my time (NZDT) or:

Los Angeles, USA Tues, 7 May 2019 at 2:00 a.m.
PDT

New York, USA Tues, 7 May 2019 at 5:00
a.m. EDT

London, United Kingdom Tues, 7 May 2019 at 10:00 a.m.
BST

Amsterdam, Netherlands Tues, 7 May 2019 at 11:00 a.m. CEST

(please check these times and adjust accordingly)

New players always welcome!

I think it's sometimes better to go a tad further out when it's a weekend.

I'll take these -- oops! -- I have to go back to see what the word is! Okay: normcore.

2. [stat.] The set of all points in a finite distribution that fall within one standard deviation of its mean.
and
7. [Stat] A point on a normal distribution within half a standard deviation of the mean.

Yeah, I fell for the similarity.

Didn’t get a def in…spent Saturday shopping at Ikea and assembling an Ikea product.

And what was the woid?Â* Actually it doesn’t matter. I can’t turn down the potato and tuna sandwich. Â*And the sunken panel is creative.

If so, I could put you in touch with him.

He is not a doctor. He is a recovered, and he has started several programs

Re: [Dixonary] Round 2981 Time for vote

As I see it:

In theory, the point of the game is to come up with fake definitions of a word that will fool people who don't know that word into thinking they're the real one.

In theory, then, a vote should reflect the voter's having been so fooled.

A voter who knows what the word means cannot be fooled. His or her vote can't have this meaning. It therefore can't reflect its composer's ability to fool players.

That said, the rules do not address the reason behind votes. I know that votes are sometimes cast for other reasons. I've done it, and several players have commented in their voting email that they did it. Still, I think allowing people who know what a word means to vote would violate the spirit of the game.

Just my 2¢,

Efrem

Re: [Dixonary] Round 2981 Time for vote

I think you have captured the essence of the game well, Efrem.

I was not there at the outset, when Neil Rubenking, Theresa Carey, Howard
Benner, and a few others started the game, as a part of the social by-play
on Benner's TapCis Forum over a 4th of July weekend. I did join up about
three or four weeks later.

The tradition of the game, well laid out in 'Da Rules,' calls for a player
to disqualify him or herself from voting on a word they know. As practiced
by Johnny Barrs, the patron saint of the DQ, one refrain from voting if
they even have a strong suspicion of the real definition.
