[Dixonary] OT: Gmail Failure?

I have a Gmail account for things like online orders. All of a sudden I
cannot get mail on that account. It claims the sending of my password
did not succeed. It says a "web login" is needed. I'm not sure I even
know how to do that but will look at my notes. Does anyone know whether
there is something going on with GMAIL? Like some kind of hacking that
they are dealing with?

That sounds suspiciously like a phishing hack. Do you have a virus scanning
utility (Norton, McAfee et al) installed? If so, run a full scan and follow
all directions. It will culminate, at some point, with a reboot.

My guess is that you will be able to sign in to that account normally at
that point.

Guerri

your normal login is via TB - ¿ yes? --- OK

every now and then Gmail decides that because it hasn't seen you for a
while then you have to use your browser to login *that is what they
mean by a "web login" -- so go to whatever browser you use - mine is
firefox - and go to gmail and login -- that should solve the problem

I agree with Johnny.

Something similar happened to me with TB.

Go to http://mail.google.com and sign in to your gmail, with ur browser.

It's not a bug or virus. It's a 'security' feature. :D

Re: [Dixonary] OT: Gmail Failure?

I have a virus scanner and a malware scanner. I don't think it's
phishing, but I don't know enough about phishing to tell. Now that you
mention it, I now wonder whether it is indeed some kind of attack and
will run my virus and malware scanners. However, I think those just deal
with bad things on my computer and not Internet stuff.

I may also update my Email software (Thunderbird).

Re: [Dixonary] OT: Gmail Failure?

Yes, I am using Tbird, and it has been nagging me to update. Perhaps
I'll do that now.

Gmail should have seen me recently because I use it almost daily to
access that particular account.

Re: [Dixonary] OT: Gmail Failure?

Thanks to all who replied. I did the web login that Gmail seemed to
want. I am not sure what I changed, if anything, but Tbird now seems to
be collecting messages as it should (I hope that statement doesn't jinx me).

I did wonder about the IP address: who assigns it? If the entity
assigning it changes it, would that matter? If so, shouldn't I have been
notified?

According to my notes the last time I updated Tbird was in April. But
the reliability of my notes is unknown.

Then there is the Adobe Flash Player which demands to be updated
monthly. And who knows how that might affect anything else. Another
thing is the AVG antivirus software. It has, at least lately, installed
something that wants to update/install AVG Secure Search or an update
request for it, without giving the user a choice. There is a way to kill
the update request but maybe there is something wrong there.

The upshot of all of this is that things seem to be back to normal,
whatever that means.

a new normal - that is what it means to exist

I have had good results by using the http://browsercheck.qualys.com web page periodically to check whether my FF and Flash need to be patched / updated. But it doesn't check TB :(

I read security RSS news feeds from SANS.edu Internet Storm Center and update TB if I see a story about a hole in it. TB is a rather mature program so it should be ok though to let it update automatically.

This is especially true for those of us who are aging. As we might say,
a new normal is better than the alternative.
