[Dixonary] Question

Is it possible to attach a .pdf file of the results in Googlegroups? It would be a huge timesaver for me if I could summarize the results in a message and attach a .pdf file that displays who voted for what, etc.

Judy

if you have to create the list in pdf you can create it anywhere. If you
use Acrobat just copy and paste into a message - I personally would be
negative to a file because of the extra work and expense it would cost
me to un-pdf it

Johnny,

I create the list (actually, a table) in WordPerfect and can then convert to .pdf. It appears that I can't paste the .pdf in a message, but I can convert the .pdf to a .jpg and paste that. I could try that, and if it doesn't work...retype everything into a message. Copying and pasting the text from the WordPerfect file doesn't work well.

Re: [Dixonary] Question

Since I've used a table, pasting the .pdf doesn't provide all the information, and editing would take more time than simply typing the information. (It pastes as text without table properties.)

I *can* paste the WordPerfect document, and the table remains intact. I'll try that. If it doesn't work, I'll go to Plan B...which probably will be to retype everything.

RE: [Dixonary] Question

A plain-text file creates the same problem as copying and pasting the .pdf file -- no table properties and data that doesn't explain the results.

It all sounds like a lot of trouble. When I (very rarely) deal, I just add
the response data (who authored each def, who voted for it) to the defs
post, which is sitting in Tbird's "sent" file. Easy.

Yes, but I'm not sure that it makes much difference from what I'm reading in the "reveal codes." The codes for the table are still there. Once this round is finished (this evening) I'll see what happens when I use the WordPerfect table.

Johnny,

I create the list (actually, a table) in WordPerfect and can then convert to .pdf. It appears that I can't paste the .pdf in a message, but I can convert the .pdf to a .jpg and paste that. if you have to create the list in pdf you can create it anywhere. If you use Acrobat just copy and paste into a message - I personally would be negative to a file because of the extra work and expense it would cost me to un-pdf it

Re: [Dixonary] Question

Yes, you can save WordPerfect documents as plain text. However, I
believe Judy said she was using a WordPerfect *table*, which may not
convert to text in a usable way. I tried it just now with a 3-row
4-column table. The text version is 4 lines for the 4 columns in row 1,
a blank line, then 4 lines for the 4 columns in row 2, etc.

When I deal, I copy and paste an MS Excel table directly into the compose
screen on the Google Groups website for the results, and it retains the
table formatting. However, I don't know whether it works if you're posting
the results by email.

Judy,

When I want to e-mail stuff from an Excel table, I use its Concatenate operator (&) in a formula that connects strings in different columns into a single string in one column of the same row, adding whatever punctuation seems appropriate between items. Then I can paste that column with no formatting issues.

Re: [Dixonary] Question

Then you ought to be able to paste the table as is into Quattro Pro and concatenate things there. The formula in Excel would work like this. Quattro Pro does the same thing in a similar (perhaps identical) way:

If you have "Barrs" in cell A2 and "John" in cell B2, then this formula in cell C2:

=A2 & ", " & B2

would produce "Barrs, John" in C2.

However, I don't think you have to leave WordPerfect for this. It supports all sorts of formulas directly in its tables. I'm not sure if it has & as a concatenate operator, but I know it has the CONCAT function that does much the same thing. You ought to be able to use

=CONCAT(A2, ", ", B2)

in cell C2 to get the same result.

I'll try pasting what I have and see if that works. If not...I'll go from there. We may already be talking about the same thing, but I'm not familiar with the "language."

Efrem,

I'm not using a spreadsheet (in my case it would be Quattro Pro, not Excel).. I'm using a WordPerfect table. To be honest, I don't even understand the spreadsheet terminology!

Judy,

When I want to e-mail stuff from an Excel table, I use its Concatenate operator (&) in a formula that connects strings in different columns into a single string in one column of the same row, adding whatever punctuation seems appropriate between items. Then I can paste that column with no formatting issues.

When I deal, I copy and paste an MS Excel table directly into the compose screen on the Google Groups website for the results, and it retains the table formatting. However, I don't know whether it works if you're posting the results by email.

Yes, but I'm not sure that it makes much difference from what I'm reading in the "reveal codes." The codes for the table are still there. Once this round is finished (this evening) I'll see what happens when I use the WordPerfect table.

Which is to say:

1. Select the appropriate text.
2. Copy the selected text (Ctrl-C in Windows)
3. Paste the copied text into the message (Ctrl-Insert in Windows)

[Dixonary] Question

So after the last few rounds, I'm seeing words from other languages -- not
words which stem from other languages into English. Has this always been
kosher? Where do we draw the line or is there a line?

Re: [Dixonary] Question

Debbie,

I dunno about earlier rounds, but in the case of mangemange, I would guess (subject to Shani's confirmation) that it's what English-speaking New Zealanders normally call that lizard, just as English-speaking Englishfolk call female cattle "cows." The only difference I see is that those of us who aren't from Kiwiland are more familiar with cows than with mangemanges. If one is kosher, so is the other - though I'm not sure what traditional Jewish dietary rules say about lizards.

Just my 2¢.
