[Dixonary] Round 2967, GINGICH, results

Folks,

The correct definition of "gingich" is #7, the chief climber or leader in climbing rocks for sea-fowl. The word is from the isle of Uist in the Outer Hebrides, and can be found (among other places) in the Dictionary of the Scots Language, http://www.dsl.ac.uk/entry/snd/gingich . Four perceptive players voted for it.

Our next dealer is Dave Cunningham, whose "[OE] a belt or girdle" garnered five votes. He also voted for the senior rock-climber for a score of 7. Shani Naylor's green stinky bean (apparently there really is such a thing, and she gave its correct Latin name; it just isn't known as a gingich) also had five votes. Her natural 5 makes her the runner-up and traditional "winnah.." Dan Widdis followed with three natural points, worth mentioning because his submission said that he was about to leave on a cruise so "I’ve intentionally submitted a def unlikely to get me the deal." Aren't those often the ones that get the most votes, or at least several?

Full results:

1. [OE] a belt or girdle. From Cunningham, D. who voted 4, *7*. Voted for by: Widdis, D.; Naylor, S.; Lodge, T.; Shepherdson, N.; Abell, T. Score: 7.

2. slimy; full of phlegm. From Embler, D. who voted 4, 11. Voted for by: None. Score: 0.

3. an incised inscription. From Carson, C. who did not vote. Voted for by: None. Score: 0.

4. labor; parturition; travail. [Obs.] From Widdis, D. who voted 1, 1. Voted for by: Cunningham, D.; Embler, D.; Naylor, S. Score: 3.

5. the green stinky bean (_Parkia speciosa_) From Naylor, S. who voted 1, 4.. Voted for by: Barrs, J.; Madnick, J.; Shepherdson, N.; Shefler, M.; Abell, T. Score: 5.

6. a medical condition that causes constant twitching. From Stevens, G. who voted *7*, 10. Voted for by: None. Score: 2.

7. the chief climber or leader in climbing rocks for sea-fowl. From Dictionary which could not vote. Voted for by: Cunningham, D.; Stevens, G.; Barrs, J.; Shefler, M. Score: D4.

8. sour cream with sliced gherkins, served as a side dish to stew. From Lodge, T. who voted 1, 12. Voted for by: Madnick, J.; Bourne, T. Score: 2.

9. the very bitter extract of the roots of Geum urbanum [used to treat rabies]. From Barrs, J. who voted 5, *7*. Voted for by: None. Score: 2.

10. [Poetry] a short poem in which the last letters of each successive line form a word. From Madnick, J. who voted 5, 8. Voted for by: Stevens, G.; Bourne, T. Score: 2.

11. a leather strap on a trunk or chest; usually two or more were required to secure the lid. From Shepherdson, N. who voted 1, 5. Voted for by: Embler, D. Score: 1.

12. a type of speech impediment characterized by the rearranging of sounds in a word (e.g. topato for potato). From Shefler, M. who voted 5, *7*. Voted for by: Lodge, T. Score: 3.

No definition from Bourne, T. who voted 8, 10. Voted for by: N/A. Score: 0..

No definition from Abell, T. who voted 1, 5. Voted for by: N/A. Score: 0.

For those who prefer tables the results follow in that form, in descending order of scores without regard for tie-breaking rules:

It's all yours, Dave!

Re: [Dixonary] Round 2967, GINGICH, results

Indeed you did, Dan. I have a new computer and I'm not used to its keyboard yet. I entered your votes as 1 and 1. My spreadsheet was smart enough not to count your vote for Dave twice, but not smart enough to figure out that one of them should have been for Nancy's #11.

So, Nancy should have one more point. Mike: would you be so kind as to update the permanent record?

Thanks for catching this, and hope the cruise is going well -
